Sorry for the long break between posts. Time got away from me and I’ve been busy with the end of school. Right now I’m in the middle of exams but after them you can expect an increase in posts. I have big plans sewing-wise which I’ll share soon.

As you might notice the name of my blog has changed. When I redesigned my blog I needed a better name and after a long search I came up with ‘Linden blossoms in my tea’ but it never sounded right. Now I’ve chosen for ‘Bohemian green bird’. I have a better feeling about this one but can’t promise it’s the definitive name. Green bird refers to my interest in a green (and simple) lifestyle plus it’s a song from the awesome anime Cowboy Bebop. Bohemian because it’s a style that inspires greatly. Do you like it?

I’m not a royalist and certainly not for a Royal family not my own, but I did watch the wedding because I wanted to see Kate’s dress. I had a few things in mind for the dress like long sleeves and lace and this dress delivered! I love it, it reminded me greatly of Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, which I love. The dress was designed by Sarah Burton, head of Alexander McQueen since his death and she did a great job. The dress is exquisitely cut and the lace appliques are amazing. On the official site I found this information about the dress:

Individual flowers have been hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a unique and organic design, which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.

I am very impressed by the craftmanship of this. I’ve seen this done on corsets and have seen tutorials of it and it’s lot’s of work to create a seamless design.

The dress is made with ivory and white satin gazar. The skirt echoes an opening flower, with white satin gazar arches and pleats. The train measures two metres 70 centimetres. The ivory satin bodice, which is narrowed at the waist and padded at the hips, draws on the Victorian tradition of corsetry and is a hallmark of Alexander McQueen’s designs. The back is finished with 58 gazar and organza covered buttons fastened by Rouleau loops. The underskirt is made of silk tulle trimmed with Cluny lace.

It not only reminded me of corsetry but also the shaping that happened in the 50′s without the pointy bras. The pleats at the back remind me of Watteau pleats. I have a small obsession with Watteau pleats so I love this detail.

Pippa’s dress, her sister and maid of honor, was also wearing a Sarah Burton creation and I love it in it’s simplicity. Some people like it better than Kate’s dress but if Kate had worn this I would have found it to simple. It’s perfect for a maid of honor and Pippa rocks this dress.

I wish Prins Wiliam and Kate a blessed marriage and many happy days together.

I met this little family on the banks of the Leie on a bycicle ride last week. Mama duck was protective of her ducklings but still allowed us to came fairly close. It was so sweet! I wanted to hug them squichy.

Here in Belgium I’ve had the most sunny weather I can remember for the Easter holiday. There’s been 2 full weeks of summer weather. For a few days we’ve even had the warmest weather in Europe! I made the best of the weather and took walks and bycicle trips. I sat outside in my little garden with my bunny and my cat for company. Miel (my bunny) tried to eat my food each time, while Keira simply stared bored at me (usually at my back as if I can’t look behind me).

I have a new dress. It’s secondhand but I never mind that. It does good things for my figure like hiding my tummy. Normally I don’t do outfit posts but with this pretty dress I want to share.

This is my watch locket I bought a few years back in London at Camden market. I want to go back to London!

Le goût du jour was a French fashion magazine that only printed in the year 1920. The info about it online is very scarce but seems this was an expensive and exclusive magazine at the time.

I have a copy of this plate in a book full with fashion plates from the 18th Century to 1930, I’ll share other plates that have caught my attention at a later time.

I love being creative. I want to be productive. At the moment I’m neither. This has to change starting NOW. At the moment I feel like my well of creativity has run dry and all I feel like doing is reading novels. Some years ago when I was in a similar state I read The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. In this workbook Julia provides several tools to get the creative juices going. Morning pages probably being the most important tool. She asks of her readers to write down your thought each morning, the first thing when you get up. This is not always easy, I remember not being able to write quick enough so that if I would write the asked amount of pages I would double of the time she thought would be needed. Also after writing down everything in your head your head gets empty so all that would written after a bit is: “I don’t know what to write” or a repeat of what’s already been written down. Julia says this is okay. Not that this makes the pages easier. Another very important tool is the artist date. This is a date with your artistic self where you do something you like. This can be hundreds of different things: cook and enjoy yourself a special meal, visit a museum, go on a photo-taking trip,… The morning pages acquaint you with yourself, write you through your blocks and the artist dates fill you with creativity.

The Artist’s Way is a 12 week long path which I will take again. I know it will help me to be more creative and productive. I want to sew more and better, and I want inspiration for this blog, but most important is I want more energy so I can accomplish these things. Taking the artist’s way is not an easy trajectory from what I remember but I plan to give it my best.

So far I’ve read the introduction and the explanation of the basic tools. Tomorrow I’ll start on my morning pages. I’ve set my alarm clock a bit earlier than usual to get an early start with them. At the moment I’m looking positive to the next 12 weeks.

This all may have looked as one big praise for Julia Cameron and her book, but let me be clear that I have one big problem with the book. It’s written way to New Age. She even knows this. She says the book feels to Christian or to New Age for some and gives an unsatisfactory solution for this, namely that you should fill in whatever you want when she speaks about God. As a Christian all this writing about a Great Creator and such without any real believe in a real Almighty God is wrong. If you don’t believe in God but do ask questions or pray to an unknown power (like this book asks of you), it’s empty. For me there is only one God and I know my creativity is a talent given by him. I am thankful to the Lord and will keep him close when I work with this book.

I finally have an unique theme for this blog. Thanks to the new Theme Frame software I was able to make one myself. I know bit of coding but php is over my head, so Theme Frame was very handy to work with. This little piece of software does a lot of the trickier stuff for you. I think I might have found a new addiction. Making themes! Right now this theme is almost finished, there are only a few things I want to add. You see the arrows in the recent posts widget? Well I want custom images there. And before the post titles I also want custom images. Those I’ll try to make myself. While I make them it would be a good idea to make a favicon too, so that everything is uniform. Any ideas on what sort of images I should make? Blossoms? Tea-pots? Hearts?

What do you think of the header images? Personally I’m crazy about them. I used images by Portia Lawrie of Miss P. Some simple photoshopping and they fit right in with the rest of the layout. The tartan background was made with an online tartan generator. I love little gadgets like that, so ingenious!

by tExTuReMaTtIc on Deviantart

Linden blossoms do not look like these at all, but wouldn’t they look good as little icons?

My apologies for not posting so long. I can’t believe it’s 2 months since my last post. During exams and the break after it I sort of let things slide and I guess I needed some time off. I’m not sure if I’m back yet. Time will show.

Here in Belgium we had great weather for the past week. It finally is spring and my pets and I are enjoying it. It’s time for sitting in the sun and long walks. I feel my batteries recharging. It’s easier to get up in the mornings and I feel creative again. Which is a good thing because I have some big gaps in my wardrobe. I’ll have to remember to only make things I need and not frivolous things like a robe à l’Anglaise… I’m thinking of buying Wearing history’s Smooth sailing pattern, for the trousers, because those I need the most. At the moment I have only one pair that fits! But before that I’m going to make the 1940′s Swing dress from Sense & Sensibility. I have this pattern for about a year already so sewing it is far overdue. I have it as an epattern so I printed it and puzzled/taped it together. It was quite the task, I felt like giving up on it before I got well started! That promises! So far I’ve done that, made some necessary adjustments to the pattern and cut it out. Tomorrow I might cut out the fabric for the toile. I won’t follow a schedule to make this, which is why I didn’t do Casey’s sew-along of this dress. If it takes me a week or a month, it’s all fine by me. (It’ll take more than a week on a guess since my favourite fabric is closed this week.)

To end I want to link you to my Pinterest to show you what I’m inspired to wear/make this spring. Click on the image for the link.

During these dark days of fall and winter I’ve let cleaning my place slip. This really didn’t help my mood at all and right now I’m in the middle of exams so I need my head on straight. Today I could let it be any longer and I finally got the energy together to start cleaning. Now that my floors are clean my head feels lighter and I’m in the mood to clean up further. It’s a nice feeling. Does this sound recognizable? So today is for cleaning and tomorrow it’s back to studying, which thanks to the nice environment I believe will go much better.
